A Green Hill Instead of a Landfill. The Elektrostal Municipal Solid Waste Landfill — 3 Years After Reclamation (Video)

6 June 2021

All reclamation works at the Elektrostal MSW landfill were completed in October 2018. Elektrostal was the first landfill reclaimed under the Clean Country project. The landfill had operated since 1973, receiving waste from the residential sector of the Elektrostal urban district as well as industrial waste. During its operation, more than one million tonnes of waste accumulated at the landfill. Waste acceptance ended in 2014, and the landfill was closed in January 2016.

As part of measures to reduce negative impacts and compensate for environmental damage, the slopes were regraded and the entire landfill body was covered with geosynthetic materials. A landfill gas collection and utilisation system was installed. At the final stage of reclamation, a layer of fertile soil was formed, with turf laid and green plantings established.
